Ethnography Questions

I am going to interview my younger sister Tina. I know that she listens to Beyonce because she has her CD. Also she is in my dance group and we usually do a least one song by her. She will surely be a fine person to interview.

1) Can you identify your self with Beyonce and if so how? If not what are somethings about you that are different?
2) What makes her stand out more than any other women music artist?
3) How long and why are you a fan of hers?
4) What do you like about her and not like about her?
5) How do you think she identifies herself with the music in american popular culture? Also how do you think the media portrays her within popular culture?

I am glad to see you figured out the technology. As for the questions they are a good start. I have a couple of suggestions. First make sure to ask some questions about her consumption of popular culture in general. Secondly, the conection to the dance team might provide interesting ground. So you might want to pick up on that a little. Finally, I would ask questions that are a little more specific as well. For example, ask her to talk about specific songs or lyrics. Does she identify with a specific song and why? Are there any songs she dislikes?

I do not know much about Beyonce, but it does seem like that breaking away from Destinys Child was a good move for her. I have seen more and more of her now that she is together with Jay Z, so I know a little more about her life and music. Your questions are good in the respect that they are open ended, and leave room for your sister to elaborate. Like Professor Snyder said, there is an obvious good connection with your sister, Beyonce and yourself, as dancing seems to tie you all together, so focusing on that could lead to some interesting discussions/outcomes.

I like the first question; it reminds me of the "Gina as Steven" essay and I think it could yield an interesting answer. But I do feel that questions 2 and 3 may be a little too similar, specifically the last part of question 3...I sort of figure that your sister's answer to question 2 might cover what this one asks. Maybe you could also think about where
Beyonce stands in terms of the history of her musical genre; what does she offer that other artists like her don't? I'd name names, but I really don't know much about her genre!
